The idea behind the Ice Bank is simple: when night electricity is low in price, ice is frozen on the plates with our Pillow Plate technology. This ice is used during the day to cool your product. We call this thermal energy storage.
High peak loads in the summer drive the investment expenditure of the electricity production industry. A kW of electricity consumed at night can be produced at a much lower marginal cost. Energy companies pass on these lower costs to the consumer through Real Time Pricing Rates. That is why thermal energy storage by Omega Ice Banks is a good investment.
How does an Ice Bank work?
An ice bank is a package of Pillow Plates that is hung in a container with water. At night when the energy is low priced, the plates freeze the water in the tank. During the day when the power is more expensive, the cooler is turned off. The ice will melt into ice water. This ice water can be used to indirectly cool your products.
You decide together with an engineer the size and capacity that your ice bank needs. Everything is possible because our ice-banks are custom-made.
Omega Ice Banks are supplied in capacities up to> 1,500 kWh per unit.
For each Pillow Plate an ice build-up of approx. 50 mm can be realized on both sides.
Almost all cooling media can be used with these ice banks, such as R717, CO2, Propylene Glycol, Ethylene Glycol, R22, R134A and R404A.
